SIPCOT to expand Oragadam industrial estate by 2500 acres
he State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) intends to buy 2,500 acres to the north and east of the Oragadam industrial estate, to make enough land available for industries to set up shop there.
Dr M. Govindan, Chairman and Managing Director, SIPCOT, on Saturday said that the corporation would buy 1,800 acres to the north and 700 acres to the east of Oragadam, to augment its land bank.
Once a sleepy village some 40 km south-west of Chennai and 10Km south of Sriperumbudur, Oragadam is today a thriving industrial centre, with global majors such as Daimler, Renault-Nissan and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Siemens (NYSE:SI) Networks and large Indian companies such as Apollo Tyres setting up manufacturing units there.
Since 2006, SIPCOT has handed over 2,803 acres to industries, Dr Govindan said, addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the expansion project of Nokia Siemens Network. (The company has started manufacturing 3G telecom hardware there.)
As many as 117 units have set up shop at Oragadam, with total investments of Rs 19,107 crore, generating 55,000 jobs, he said.
SIPCOT intends to set up a skill upgradation centre at Oragadam, spending Rs 2 crore for that purpose, Dr Govindan said.
