About Rs 20,000 crore will be invested in a greenfield airport in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, says Tamil Nadu's vision 2023 document.

The second airport proposed in the auto cluster of Sriperumbudur, about 40 km west off Chennai, will span 4,800 acres. The feasibility report is with the State Government. Once work on this airport starts, it is expected to be completed by 2020.

A rail connection to the industrial belts of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam could become a reality. This project has been a long-pending demand of thousands of units, including car manufacturers, located in the two regions located west of Chennai.

The Railway Ministry had forwarded a proposal for a rail link from Avadi to Guduvancheri via Sriperumbudur and Oragadam to the Planning Commission for appraisal. This is one of the 85 proposals sent to the Planning Commission.

A renowned real estate builder, Godrej Properties Ltd. (GPL), which is a realty arm of the Godrej Group, has recently announced the launch of its first residential project, Godrej Palm Grove, in Chennai. The project in question, which is spreading across 12.5 acres, is said to be the premium residential project consisting of 16 and 19 storey towers, offering a total of 1,556 modern apartments of 2 and 3 BHK apartments with a size range from 1,188 sq. ft to 1,489 sq. ft.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has dropped its plan to build a parallel runway at the Chennai airport. The decision comes after the state government informed AAI that they would rather prefer a new airport at Sriperumbudur.

The parallel runway was proposed in 2006 after studies showed that the existing terminals and runways would be inadequate to handle air traffic and the existing airport will saturate by 2015. But AAI had put the project on hold after the state government in 2009 expressed a keen interest to have an airport at Sriperumbudur.
